The ABC Showcase is an annual event held in the salubrious surrounds of Parliament House with the requisite number of parliamentarians, ABC personalities, management and stars. Yes the real stars come out for this event with those two Bananas doing ‘nana sandwiches’ with all and sundry, Eddie Perfect – and yes he is – posing perfectly, Lee Kernaghan with hat and a gift of his Spirit of the Anzacs CD, an Outback ER nurse keeping Charlie Pickering’s pulse steady as he is a tad anxious about his new show that starts in 27days, and the hirsute Greek gardener Costa Georgiadis catching up with his local member Warren Snowden.
It’s a night to share all the new programs, acknowledge the past year’s successful ones and show where the ABC sits in a market that changes as quickly as the technology that is the ABC strength focusing on the regional areas particularly for all those platforms that are launching pads for content of radio, television and online.
It is a fun night with the serious news and comment brigade mixing it with the on air presenters of radio and television and the photo opportunities keeping everyone busy especially staffers armed with the ubiquitous iPhones. Malcolm Turnbull was there in his capacity as purse strings holder for the ABC which has of course caused grief for so many of Aunty's loyal staff and nothing you say can make that better.
But the little pig who helped ABC MD Mark Scott tug the heartstrings of those who would pull the proverbial from under the ABC got due credit for her impact on the changing viewing of the littlies who have demanded the app that makes her an instant viewing opp on the iPad. Do not, I repeat to all parents and particularly grandparents, get in the way of a small person who wants to watch Peppa Pig….NOW!
But for the grown-ups who’ve regained the television as the littlies use the iPad, the Gallipoli story will be front and centre, as too a more current story about six families of someone who served in Afghanistan telling how they’ve coped after the tour of duty. Heather Ewart will be back in the country for another series and all that news and current affairs we rely on for a better take on all things local, national and international will be our benchmark for excellence.
