Affirm is the Australian Foundation for Mental Health Research and its fundraisers are among the most wonderful occasions of fine food and wine, great company and entertainment, exceptional venues and desirables to max out the credit card.
There is a serious side, and in the hands of Chairperson Margaret Reid, you’re left in no doubt that mental health research is making a difference, but there’s a long way to go. And while celebrity deaths linked to mental health issues shock us, there is a need closer to home for us all to understand and get the help and support for family, friends and colleagues when they show signs of depression particularly.
The dinner at Gandel Hall was with long formal tables, unlike the first Affirm Gourmet lunch at the Botanic Gardens meandering the Eucalyptus Lawn that set the bar high for subsequent occasions, but this board always excels. The red roses were impressive, the food and Mount Majura wines perfect, and Grace Knight with her sultry voice entertained in her inimitable style following an astounding chorus of trumpets to welcome guests.
Guests put their hands in their pockets buying lucky envelopes for the most discerning range of donated products and services, picked a pearl with a number to win Creations stunning pearl and rare sapphire enhancer, to daintily add to your necklace if you could encourage Vanessa Carlin to part with it as she relished being the ‘neck model’. She didn’t win it but her husband, Norm Korte, surprised her buying a luxury escape to the Karma Kandara spa resort in Bali. She might be on that plane today, as should all the board to recover from a formidable effort making this night another successful Affirm event.
