Australian of the Year Finalists: Government House Reception

24 January 2017

As the culmination of a long selection process for states and territories, announcements, publicity and then joining the other finalists for the trip to Canberra it is no doubt a well deserved reward for the finalists in the four Australian of the Year categories to let the parties begin and just go with the flow of a meticulously organised caravanserai to be feted and congratulated in style.

Canberra at the end of January is hot, the locals are drifting back from the coast with a lethargy that’s hard to dispel and the awards parties and Australia Day celebrations are the last gasp of Summer Aussie style before back to school and parliamentarians reluctantly come back, but the welcome for these amazing Aussies is not diminished by that ennui  as the PM and the GG open their residences, and the Murray’s buses – a little incongruous on the driveway it must be said – whisk the guests around the venues.

They’ve left their homes in all parts of the country, chosen a partner to share the and packed a suitcase full of options. The first big soiree to enjoy is the buffet on the lush lawns of Government House under the tall trees with their hosts, Sir Peter and Lady Cosgrove, just back in time from a Sydney sojourn to play hosts and a cacophony from the cockatoos giving their sunset performance.

Perfect weather, an eclectic mix of people to meet or catch up with and all as smooth as expected.  Government House does it so well. And a perfect beginning for this celebratory few days with someone else doing the driving.
