Bosom Buddies 20th Anniversary Dinner

26 October 2015

Bosom Buddies is an organisation of volunteers who fill a gap in the distressing process of dealing with breast cancer. And they know what it’s like, know what’s needed and fill the gap with love, kindness, caring and compassion for the many and varied needs of breast cancer patients because they’ve been there and have come smiling through.

That’s not entirely true. The smiling through is often a grimace, plenty of tears, pain, frustration and desperarion but determination and a stoic acceptance of the process. Because it is a process and for everyone diagnosed its different.

I recently read the story of a well known television personality and her breat cancer ‘journey’. Journey is the word that sends shivers down my spine because it’s not a trip to anywhere, it’s a process, and for everyone the reaction to the process is where today’s medical advancements have made survival rates heartening. The ancillary care, the organisations you can turn to and the medical teams who care for you have your survival paramount.

And this is where 20 years of Bosom Buddies is a reflection of how they come together to provide support from diagnosis to recovery. It is I believe an essential service and having been a part of so many of their efforts to raise money, to raise awareness and always celebrate life the one thing they would love to see is the end of the breast cancer scourge.

Katy Gallagher was the inspirational speaker for the Bosom Buddies 20th birthday party with a speech to bring a tear to many of us with a few of her secrets not in the public domain being told, engendering from us all total respect for a lady who like many has had difficult things to deal with and showed the spirit to overcome can be found in all of us.

Annette Ellis as the patron of the organsiation has used her profile and personality over many years to help Bosom Buddies, as a breast cancer survivor it was the first phone call she made when diagnosed, and for her support was made a Life Member.

It was a night of celebration, welcoming so many of the original members to the party, remembering those who didn’t make it and looking forward to keeping the unique Bosom Buddies concept helping wherever its needed.
