Brumbies v Reds @ Casino Canberra

14 March 2015

The celebratory fireworks for the annual Skyfire was a fitting background noise – sadly viewing the spectacle was impossible -  for those fans who gathered at Casino Canberra for the Brumbies v Reds game viewing on the big screens……with beer, chips and schnitzel it must be said. That they got to the venue is to be commended as parking anywhere near Casino Canberra was at a premium.

It is not quite as good as being there but at least with the coverage in the Casino’s designated Brumbies Citadel in what was once to be the high rollers enclave, you are up close and personal to every detail of the game and sitting comfortably with all the comforts of home close by and delivered by personable staff.

David Pocock sat this game out with the fans and assured me he’s getting better from whatever it has been that’s kept him off the park. I must say he’s looking decidedly fit, and is like so many of the Brumbies, a genuinely nice bloke.  I did mention the despair we had for Ricky Stuart all those years ago when more column inches were devoted to his groin problems than would seem appropriate for family newspapers and television programs. When the players who are the machines of a game breakdown, what is it about the intimate and precise examination of their every injury that requires endless detail.

But injuries aside the Brumbies won. Well it was more than that but we mustn’t gloat because it can all come apart so easily as this season has barely kicked off. But a reminder to fans that there is no need to sit at home alone when you can watch the away games at Casino Canberra and be in the company of like minded supporters. I did find a couple of Reds supporters but just as well they came in mufti and probably left in tears. A loss of that magnitude is worth a good cry.
