There are theatre shows that creep up on you. You don’t know what they’re about, haven’t researched them nor caught up with the stage whispers and goss that usually abounds. C!RCA fits the bill and after the event I’m now a fan of this hard to define contemporary circus experience.
Seven fit young performers combined acrobatics, aerobics, gymnastics, contemporary dance with music and choreography to create a theatre experience that demonstrated exceptional physicality, musculature and a mesmerizing blending of movement and agility. One among them is a local. Duncan West is fit, lean and slight of frame but physically seems to defy gravity with his performance that had his mother on the edge of her seat in the audience watching with trepidation because she knows the risk. And that’s the essence of C!RCA, a clever mix of bodies pushing to a limit only they know and finding a smooth and extraordinary choreography of movement to entertain an audience who thinks circus should have fairy floss and lions.
Home for C!RCA is Brisbane and during 2013 this little company performed locally, nationally and internationally 420 times and maintained a very successful Training Centre for all ages to try hard to emulate this level of fitness that is beyond most of us. But what is so exciting is they are pushing the boundaries as creator and director Yaron Lifschitz’s vision becomes the passion of his ensemble.
