Great Minds Charity Trivia Night

19 October 2014

Often it’s the little things that make the biggest difference. Courtesy, kindness, respect and tolerance come to mind of course and are at the very essence of our sense of community and generosity when asked to support those who need it most. For that the annual Great Minds Charity Trivia Night shows us how to spread the need, share the spoils and make a tangible difference to many, as the money raised is dispersed to a number of charitable causes who’ve all articulated their most important need.

Melissa Miller, Managing Director of Servcorp is the master of the Great Minds domain - and the Canberra business of this worldwide company - who gathers her formidable group of volunteers, family and corporate supporters for the trivia night where the group brains are tested, the spread of questions challenges all generations and everybody has fun. Held at the Hotel Realm with the DOMA Group the major partner it is a brilliant example of a simple and popular game being expanded into a fundraiser and charity support network for many. Among them the major ones, Cancer Support Group and HOME in Queanbeyan, with targeted monies going to a wide range of needs across 12 other charities all interviewed by Melissa and her Great Minds team, for the hands-on approach they have created with the charities.

This year $160,000 was raised, and that means the Shepherd Centre for deaf children will get air conditioning, there’ll be new (non medicinal of course) ‘tablets’ for those with autism from the Ricky Stuart Foundation and The PCYC will look to establish a café as a training environment for vulnerable youth and Pegasus can continue to provide horse riding for the disabled.

Not so trivial, and all from the generosity of many prepared to answer such important trivia – without Wikipaedia of course – as what are the names of the wives of the last five male Australian Prime Ministers when in office, what colour is Viagra, in a standard pack of cards what are all the Queens holding and in what movie did Sharon Stone play Arnold Schwarzeneggers’ wife?
