Independence Day Celebrations for USA 2015Share Event on Facebook Share Event on Twitter Share Event on LinkedIn
There are absolutes for USA Independence Day celebrations at the Ambassador’s residence in Canberra. It will be cold and most unlikely to be actually held on July 4, and all will be decked out in the appropriate bunting and balloons. The roses will be pruned to within a bud of their life, not a leaf out of place and the Ghiradelli hot chocolates, or something a little stronger, awaiting cold hands.
Ambassador John Berry and partner Curtis Yee mingle among familiar faces and new Aussie friends as the embassy staff and spouses also contribute to the good old hospitality that this event ensures. This year a first as Alex Sloan and her merry band of 666 ABC producers presented her afternoon show from a tent near the rose garden, while sportier types entered the field of baseball dreams that arrives every year in the bottom garden.
And then along came PM Tony Abbott for the formalities with the accompanying media onslaught. Ambassador Berry happily following along as push came to shove and all and sundry tried to get in on the meet and greet, and the selfie.
Departing this ‘birthday’ party and a gift bag of lollies and cup cakes was a bonus, most consumed before the day was out.
