Italy's Republic Day reception 2016Share Event on Facebook Share Event on Twitter Share Event on LinkedIn
The Italians celebrated their Republic Day in Canberra with a house full of an eclectic mix of people, all crowding companionably into their fantastic residence that makes you feel like you’re somewhere in Italy marvelling at their sense of style and design, while indulging in the best thin crust pizza and fine wines.
Regulars catch up and one most notable with a big heart and determination is Joe Giugni who has had a tough time of late but wouldn’t miss this night despite now needing a wheelchair. His ever smiling wife Chunchi takes caring for this gentle giant of a man in her tiny stride.
Welcoming guests in his smart uniform was the embassy’s resident Carabinieri representative Alessandro Simonelli with the ever sartorial Oscar Moze the Science Attache who stood in as the Master of Ceremonies for the night, something he has declared he wont do again. Doing her best hostess with style circuits of the room was the ambassador’s wife Svetlana as the three Zazo children, Lavinia, Isabella and Alessio, sat quietly behind the glass that separates the reception rooms from the family’s living area with the nicest diplomatic dog, Tredbo, a King Charles Spaniel, I’ve offered to mind any time they go away.
Ambassador Pier Francesco Zazi spoke particularly of Italy’s current refugee crises and the mind boggling numbers who are being rescued off their coast and of course the tragedies that occur They don’t turn the boats back, but show their humanity with 150,000 refugees in 2015.
I love this house and the intrinsic Italian decor, the large central courtyard, huge walls of glass and marble floors and remember well crawling around the floor with fashion guru Emilio Pucci checking the models shoes for his exquisite fashion parade many years ago. That I became a fan of his designs was influenced by that occasion. Among the guests the FASHFEST creators, Andrea and Clint Hutchinson with a couple of their favourite models were a stunning addition to this night’s event.
Outside the regular display of the covetable Ferraris, a Lamborghini and Alfa Romeos took it all up a notch for the best of Italian design and then under the lampost at the front gate a bike was parked. I love that someone had pedalled in for this celebration of Italy’s Republic Day.
