Mary Poppins is the kind of nanny the government should provide subsidies for. A magical nanny, not a cranky old crone with Edwardian ideas of discipline that caused the Banks children to run away from home. And the original film from the mid sixties that Disney produced was a musical fantasy based on the PL Travers’ books with Julie Andrews and Dick van Dyke as the stars.
The Mary Poppins image of a PYT (pretty young thing) with her brolly and Gladstone bag that was the opposite of the crones of yesteryear prevails and Free Rain will bring their own choice of a PYT to their Mary Poppins role with Alinta Chidzey in the role of Mary and a HYT (handsome young thing) Shaun Rennie in the role of Bert the screever, her best buddy. And what is a screever? An artist who draws on the path with chalk.
A rather nursery style selection of sandwiches and scones was a pleasant repast for the meet and greet of the stars, the director and the team behind the scenes of this production at Teatro Vivaldi. And director Stephen Colyer hinted at just some of the magic, mystery and trickery they’ll be using for the production. Mary of course has to come down from the clouds and clouds these days are chock a block with all manner of digital detritus!
Mary Poppins is at the Canberra Theatre 12-29 March.
