Melbourne Cup Lunch @ National Press Club 2017

7 November 2017

What is it about the Melbourne Cup that sends ladies into a frenzy of fashion fantasy as they dress up to the nth degree, teeter around in ridiculous shoes with weird hats on their heads and vie for fashion validation in such a competitive way.

Yes I’ve done it too, but with a camera in my hands these days I opt for comfort, as walking backwards in heels while taking photographs is fraught with danger and discomfort. But I still love the whole shebang and while I’ve eschewed the trackside option, a leisurely lunch is a preferred choice and the regular lunch at the National Press Club always brings out the glamorous fillies and sartorial blokes intent on the food, fun and frivolity this day engenders.

There are the usual sweeps, betting on quinellas, boxed trifectas et al after considered reading of form guides that are compulsory for those who can be bothered, while sipping ‘champagne’ and  enjoying a fine spread of delicious food as the Zampatti fashionistas peruse and ponder the possibilities in the fashion categories.

And so another Tuesday in November gives us a day to dress up, sit down and enjoy a party atmosphere as the horses take centre stage and in but a few minutes it all ends so quickly. Some will win, most wont but we’ll be back again next year to do it all over again.
