A Sunday afternoon at the Q Theatre with the ‘other’ symphony orchestra that Canberra can boast was a triumph of an instrument that is percussionist Veronica Bailey’s forte. As soloist for the National Capital Orchestra’s April concert her playing of the marimba in the Eric Ewazen Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra showed her versatility and the magic of the marimba. The NCO is a quality outfit of trained musicians who have found a happy balance between work and the passion they’ve always had for playing in a symphony orchestra. There are four major concerts a year and a concerto concert. And for versatility another star on this day was cellist Martin Elias who played his cello in the first part of the program and then slipped easily onto the piano stool for some energetic work in the Shostakovich Symphony No 1.
