Reception for the Vice Presient of Argentina Gabriela Michetti

21 March 2017

A reception at the Great Hall of the High Court of Australia was held for the official visit of the Vice President of the Argentine Republic Ms Gabriella Michetti with most guests from the local diplomatic community, a few politicians and local embassy staff with for many of us the surprise return of one of our favourite former Ambassadors for Argentina, Pedro Villagra Delgardo as part of the official delegation that was unexpected and as always a pleasure.

We had time to catch up as the VP was delayed by commitments and meet and greets on this official visit, and congratulate Pedro on his new position as Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs. And how much we’ve missed him in Canberra where as a long serving ambassador and former Dean of the Diplomatic Corps he was front and centre at so many official events. He reckons Canberra introduced him to more heads of state, royalty, presidents and prime ministers than he’s ever likely to meet in Buenos Aires.

The visit to Australia by the Vice President was a busy one with an official dinner in Sydney as guest speaker for the Australia-Latin America Business Council with her delegation bringing Vice Ministers of agribusiness, industry, mining and small business to discuss and encourage investment in Argentina where the government of Mauricio Macri is endeavouring to revitalise the economy of Argentina.

That continued in Canberra where she met with government and opposition representatives and  was welcomed by the Governor General Sir Peter Cosgrove and his wife Lady Cosgrove for an official lunch to return the hospitality they received in Argentina in August 2016.

What an impressive lady. Not just in her capacity as Vice President but as a wheelchair bound but active and involved participant in the government of her country and with the grace and poise to get on with the busyness of her position at the international level.
