Snowy Hydro SouthCare Christmas Gala 2016

2 December 2016

The Snowy Hydro SouthCare annual Christmas Gala is mammoth in its production and magnificent in its realisation. There have been many to remember fondly as a night to support and party for this cause  in various venues, but this one worked again at the most unlikely space at the Farmer’s Market that was such a success last year the master of the production Simon Cosier  realised it would be just right again. And it was.

Imagine first the clean- up of the space; a huge tin shed with a sloping concrete floor that needs a lot of tizzying up to make it comfortable and workable and then after the last guest totters off to ‘bump out’ the whole shebang. That’s tables and chairs, all the catering equipment, a mass of lighting and sound equipment and a very valuable grand piano. But they do it and we as guests are none the wiser to what’s really involved.

We arrive to a chorus of Christmas carols to drinks trays of the finest, exceptional local produce to taste and lots of mixing and mingling with a very stylish bunch dressed for a glam occasion. I ate too many Clyde River oysters, so fresh they were harvested that morning , and can absolutely recommend you buy them next time you’re at the market.

But there was more to come in the eating part of the evening with a menu of treats from the Harden duck cooked Peking style to the High Country pork sirloin, the Riverina grass-fed beef filet accompanied by Lambert’s wines.

For dessert it was the best big buffet in town with macarons, cupcakes and tarts, miniature Artisan doughnuts,  a candy bar selection or gelato and sorbet as you strolled around the room as if wandering  piazza in Italy, or making time for the photo booth option with a bunch of tiddly mates.

Natarsha Belling was the guest MC, what a charmer she is coping well in a very large tin shed for the official parts of this event, as we hear stories from those former patients on the choppers that have flown so far in 2015-16 457 missions.

Among the guests was Snowy Hydro SouthCare Ambassador Scott Reardon and his beautiful wife Vaness Low. Scott is a past patient of the service, a gold medal winning Paralympian in Rio for the 100 metres and an inspiration. He had his ‘blade runner’ leg with him to show us all and his gold medal but what he has achieved is to be admired. It was a shoelace caught in a power take off shaft of a tractor that severed Scott’s leg through the knee in 2002. But he was back walking within a month and has achieved goals that are commendable.

So a great night was had by all, with auctions, raffles, bauble buying for surprise gift parcels, soft toy purchasing to win a Smart TV and the very delicious champagne bar to win a Briolette Diamond. Congratulations to the team, a herculean effort again.
