The Starlight Foundation Dinner generously provided at her O’Malley home by Sotiria Liangis was one the Starlight ACT committee will remember for many years. Out with the lounge room furniture and in with the tables, chairs, napery, gleaming glassware, flowers and a Greek band that could have been plucked from an Athens taverna to give the 100 guests paying $1000 each, a memorable evening, and give the Foundation $101,000 clear and unencumbered for this fundraiser. The extra $1000, just in case you think my maths is crook, was for an extra guest that Margaret Job of the committee casually brushed over saying someone brought their mum.
In the spectacular rooms of this house wandering guests were surrounded by the kind of opulence rarely seen outside Toorak and Darling Point mansions, but each and every aspect of the house is part of Sotiria Liangis’ dream build with meticulous attention to detail and couches to get lost in, chandeliers, gilt, paintings, marble and luxurious fabrics to admire and a warm welcome to all the guests to enjoy their surroundings.
The Canberra Girls Grammar School choir performed on the staircase which created an intimate setting as opposed to the front verandah that could easily fit the Mormon Tabernacle Choir but was thought to be a bit chilly on this night. The string quartet entertained and delighted before guests were ushered to their tables and dinner began.
The Ottoman catered for the dinner, the wines were exceptional and the staff splendid. Smooth operations were guaranteed with this extraordinary committee who always come up trumps with their team effort and generosity to make every Starlight event a success. And with them sitting in the official dining room - it looked like a room from an ABC ‘bonnet drama’ - their ‘private dinner’ was quite an intimate affair.
For the official welcome and acknowledgements it was Margaret Job on behalf of the Starlight Foundation who thanked everyone, Angelo Liangis, who at just 8 spoke beautifully to say his thanks to the guests and John Liangis who spoke kindly and emotionally of the mother who has given this wonderful gift in between building a hotel and still working at the pace that for her is a lifestyle.
