Katharine Chang as the Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Australia is the epitome of diplomacy. She is afforded only representative status by Australia because of our diplomatic relations with mainland China, and as such there is confusion about her title, though none about the respect with which she is held by our politicians and business leaders. And there’s no doubt that Taiwan hosts the best national day party with all the trimmings, all the pomp and ceremony and a mighty big representation from our politicians.
And her staff and assistants are among the most pleasant and polite you are ever likely to meet. They’re young too, and definitely representative of the growing number of students in Australia and the respect they have for the formalities required.
But its trade where we and Taiwan are forging ahead and the business partners’ display for this event were impressive with the hand held ‘device’ – everything’s a device these days – I’m assured is a computer. Lock stock and transportable terabytes galore, a hand held to plug in to a computer anywhere. Impressive, but sadly no samples.
