Wicked @ The Canberra Theatre

15 October 2016

Wicked at The Canberra Theatre is a triumph for Anne Somes and Free Rain Theatre Company yet again bringing a professional and exuberant show to the city with an opening night audience that filled the theatre and thoroughly enjoyed every aspect.

The story line takes some getting your head around as a prequel to the ‘Wizard of Oz’ where a  friendship between the beautiful blonde Glinda and the ostracised, misunderstood and ‘emerald green’ Elphaba develops at Shiz University.

What ensues is a rollicking good show that takes you galloping on a journey that is magical and fun, with music and songs to stir and voices from the stars to make you sit up and be enthralled. The set, lighting, costumes, choreography and music are extraordinary and this production an example of the talent that abounds in Canberra which works well with the ‘imports’ Laura Murphy as Glinda – Reese Witherspoon you have competition – Loren Hunter as Elphaba and Drew Weston as Fiyero joining the Free Rain Company.

Wicked is a successful international phenomenon and that it can and has been brought to this Canberra  stage a credit to the producer Anne Somes and director Shaun Rennie. Bookings are going gangbusters, make it a must see and be swept up in an off- very far off-  Broadway show in our fair city.
