Women in Racing Annual Lunch @ Hellenic Club

1 September 2017

Legacy Week reminds of the importance of continued support for families of defence and police personnel who have died. AFP Legacy, formerly the Chequered Ribbon Association, continues their work providing support and financial assistance for all families of AFP members who’ve died.

AFP Deputy Commissioner Michael Phelan, was invited to get amongst the Fabulous Fillies who make up the Women in Racing group who this year decided to raise money to benefit the AFP’s Legacy Week fundraising. It was probably a welcome relief from his usual day job as AFP Deputy Commissioner for National Security. And he happily settled in for a long lunch and good company.

As guest speaker for this annual lunch, the fillies dressed to the hilt in the AFP’s colours noted by Phelan as the colours for the winning mare Winx, he was among a very supportive and stylish bunch which for more than 20 years have been frocking up, conducting raffles, perusing fancy fashions and fabulous hats while wining and dining and enjoying lots of secret women’s business. Just like a day at the races without the horses, but with a phantom race call and all the hoots and hollering that an imagined race can muster.

For a good cause and just for fun the WIR girls sure know how to turn a Friday lunch into a good reason to look fabulous.
